Problem:
The patient presented with several dental issues:
1. “Localized severe periodontitis” or loss of the gum and bone structures that hold the teeth in tight. This meant some teeth had become loose and infected requiring extraction (removal).
2. Retained plaque on and between teeth plaque that was creating the periodontitis in the first place.
3. Staining and decay around old fillings of the front and back teeth.
Treatment:
The gaps created by the teeth extractions (as well as the tooth already missing) were replaced with an acrylic (plastic) partial denture. This was fabricated after the teeth were given thorough cleaning and the gum had healed. The denture stays in via metal clasps that grasp the existing, healthy back teeth. He is able to eat almost all foods with the denture.
Old fillings that had deep staining and decay were removed and new ones placed. If the staining wasn’t deep, the fillings were polished to remove the discoloration to a satisfactory level the patient was happy with.
How long it took:
The fillings were completed over two sessions and the extractions were coordinated with the denture fabrication which involved 4 quick appointments 1 week apart from each other.
Patient feed back:
The patient was extremely happy with the outcome and stated that he “now feels confidence going to job interviews” and said he feels “much happier with my appearance”.
